The Austrian Lifelong Guidance Strategy, finalised by a working group of the Lifelong Guidance Forum in October 2006 under the leadership of Gerhard Krötzl, was the first component of the later "Strategy for Lifelong Learning in Austria, LLL:2020" as one of its five central guidelines and as an element in seven of the ten action lines, linked with concrete goals, indicators and benchmarks.

Thispublication is not a comprehensive "history of the National Forum Lifelong Guidance Austria", but a presentation from the subjective point of view of the authors Peter Härtel and Michaela Marterer, and their involvement in parts of this history of the last 20 years and the time before, also with considerations for the future. In particular, European and international cooperation and its relation to developments in Austria are also addressed.
